The essay incorporates your blog, but it must go further. The focus shifts to analyze Carlos’s family circumstances. How did Carlos’s family circumstances enable and/or hinder his educational opportunities at the three schools? Discuss how poverty limits opportunities for individuals and communities. Consider factors such as access to education, healthcare, and social services. To answer that question, use theoretical ideas found in the module three readings and media, specifically to support your analysis of Carlos’s life. The work of Frank Furstenberg and Annette Lareau will be very helpful.
Write an introduction for your essay that defines social class and its role in determining children’s developmental and educational opportunities. Remember to use the week three videos and the podcast as sources of information to help you incorporate important key concepts of capitalization, social mobility, opportunity structure, meritocracy, social stratification, social inequality, and poverty into your discussion.
Write a brief conclusion that restates your main points and proves your thesis. Include a statement on the value of the virtual field Trip. Did the Google Earth virtual field trip of the school neighborhoods mentioned in this podcast help you to better understand class differences than if you were to just listen to the podcast without the virtual tour? In other words, did you find the addition of the virtual field trip to be helpful for your learning about class stratification and opportunity structures? Why or why not?
Give your essay a descriptive title. Use course readings and media to help you analyze the images and the podcast by providing the social and historical conditions that give rise to social inequality in for families. You are expected to include ideas and concepts from each author we read in module three. Additional research is recommended to analyze the social stratification adequately.
