To prepare:
• Review the Learning Resources on social work with couples experiencing intimate partner violence.
• Imagine you are attending a couples therapy conference, and you have been asked to speak as part of a panel discussion on ethical considerations for couples therapy with couples experiencing intimate partner violence.
• There is not uniform consensus about the appropriateness of couples therapy for couples experiencing intimate partner violence. Use the Learning Resources and additional scholarly literature to explore when couples therapy might be appropriate and when couples therapy might be the wrong treatment format for a couple experiencing intimate partner violence.
• Consider how a social worker could screen for intimate partner violence during the intake process.
Day 7:
Submit a 5- to 6-slide PowerPoint presentation with narration, in which you educate fellow social workers about ethical dilemmas posed by therapy with a couple experiencing intimate partner violence. Your PowerPoint presentation should address the following:
• Analyze the appropriateness of couples therapy for a couple experiencing intimate partner violence. Use Learning Resources and additional scholarly literature to support your claims.
• Identify two relevant ethical standards from the NASW Code of Ethics and explain how they inform your perspective.
• Explain how a social worker could screen for intimate partner violence during the intake process.
• At times, clients choose not to disclose intimate partner violence at intake or lack the insight to accurately describe its severity. Explain what a social worker could do if they begin to suspect intimate partner violence may be present after they have already begun working with a couple.
Use the Learning Resources to support your Assignment. Make sure to provide APA citations and begin with a title slide and conclude with a reference slide. (The title slide and reference slide are not included in the 5- to 6-slide count.) Your presentation should use clear, professional language and formatting. The narration should meaningfully contribute to the presentation. (Students should not simply repeat the words on each slide.) A complete transcript of the narration should be included in the notes section.
