Europe’s “postwar” period had largely come to an end by 1968, in the sense that the continent was no longer significantly occupied with, or haunted by, the consequences of the Second World War. Do you agree or disagree, and why?

The Process:

In a well-organized essay of around 1,600 words (+ or – 50 words), clearly address the prompt in an essay that draws on Postwar, by Tony Judt, as well as our class discussions and debates. You must incorporate at least five (5) direct quotations from Judt, which must come from at least three (3) different chapters. Each quotation will be at least 10 words, but no longer than 35 words, in length. You will also include at least one direct quotation from a primary source that you have selected from the German History in Documents and Images (GHDI) website or, if you choose, from a document collection of your own discovery (cleared with me ahead of time).

Observe the following:

  • Each quotation should be 10-35 words.
  • Introduce each quotation so that the reader knows who has written the words that appear within the quotation marks and can put those words in context.
  • Include actual page numbers for all quotations. If you are using an eBook that does not have page numbers, then simply check out the 2-hour reserve copy to locate them quickly.
  • Use dates (!) in order to provide the necessary context for a given quotation, event, or trend.
  • Always underline the title of a book, like this, or place it in italics, like this (but do not do both)
  • Use apostrophes carefully, particularly with respect to Nazis/Nazis’ (you will likely never need to use “Nazi’s”) and Italian’s/Italians’. In both cases, the latter form is the plural possessive and the one you are most likely to use — “The Nazis’ policy of extermination evolved over time.”

The Audience:

Provide enough background information so that a friend or a parent will understand the logic of your argument and the relevance of your examples without having close familiarity with the material in this course.
