It may be helpful to think about who was left out of the middle class created by the New Deal and GI Bill reforms, as well as how freedoms were limited by the politics of wartime (WW2 and the Cold War).

During the Gilded Age, much of the social and political conflict revolved around the workplace and the rights of workers. By contrast, the many movements of the mid-century looked quite different. Why? How was this related to the New Deal?
