explaining either why you would like to pursue a career in the federal or provincial public service or a local municipality or why you would be opposed to working as a public servant

Would you rather work in the federal, provinicial or municipaplity public sector in CAnada or are you oppposed to being a public servant. Inpersonal essay. What might be some of the elements that you would want to consider in your essay? For many individuals who work in the public sector, they have a deep desire to develop public policies that contribute to the public good. In other words, you may have what is referred to in the literature as a public service motivation. It might be the breadth of employment opportunities that attracts youto the public sector (i.e., think about all of the various job classifications and different educational backgrounds of those who are employed in the public sector) and the numerous opportunities for both lateral (i.e., different regions or parts of the country or even overseas assignments) and upwards job mobility (i.e., lots of opportunities for promotions). Maybe it is the diversity of the people working in the public sector that you find appealing (here you can
comment on the various target groups in the public sector and the extent to which they are represented amongst the ranks of the public service). Perhaps the pay and benefits are an important consideration in your decision; if so, then you should address the typical levels of compensation for the entry-level position(s) that are of interest to you. Moreover, you could comment on some of the human resource management policies in place in public sector organizations that make government employment appealing to you (e.g., job sharing, work-life
balance, opportunities for training and development). For those of you who are not interested in public sector employment, why is that the case? Is it the fact that as you progress through your career, the compensation and benefits in the public
sector are not nearly as lucrative as private sector employment? Alternatively, is it the fact that it still takes too long to make a hiring decision and that too few indeterminate positions are available upon graduation that is making you less receptive to public sector employment? Perhaps your impression is that despite the changes to the public sector because of new public management to allow for greater discretion and autonomy for public servants, it is still too stifling a work environment. In other words, the public sector is still too slow and ressitant to change and too rule-bound to allow you to be creative and innovative in your work. Perhaps you are unilingual and view your inability to work in French as a serious impediment to having a
successful public sector career (although there would be opportunities to learn French while employed in the public service). It may be that you do not view anything in particular to be problematic about public sector employment, but you perceive private or non-profit sector employment to be more rewarding. Why is that the case?
While the course textbook is a good place to begin in terms of thinking about the various aspects of the public sector as a potential employer that may be an advantage or liability, you must reference at least FIVE additional sources (i.e., 6 sources, including the textbook, at a minimumin your essay. This could include scholarly articles and books that relate to the public sector or to the private sector or various government documents and reports that deal with different aspects of the public sector.
