Longer Essay (8–10 pages, typewritten, double-spaced)
Answer the following question in an essay of eight to ten, double-spaced pages. Your essay should include a brief bibliography of three to five academic sources, whether journal articles or books on the topic.
Using Chapter 8, Aftermath: What Legacies, What Lessons of Why? Explaining the Holocaust as a starting point, explore the following questions: What is the meaning of the Holocaust in today’s society? How does that meaning differ for Jews and non-Jews? What legacy did this crime leave for the communities in which we live? What were the practical effects of this mass murder? What were the less tangible but nonetheless real effects of the Holocaust on communities of faith? On nation-states? On political governance? Your response should be an argument explaining and defending the conclusion you have reached from your research. You will be responsible for developing the thesis on your own, meaning you will need to focus your research carefully. It is not necessary to answer every aspect of these questions equally; you should be guided by your research and conclusions. Your essay should show a thorough understanding of the topic.

Note: These questions allow some leeway for the precise definition of your topic. Part of your task is to determine the areas of the topic that are of greatest interest. You’ll then have to develop a strong, coherent thesis based on what you have learned from the sources that you have gathered.
