Write a paper explaining what you think some of the more important philosophical or religious ideas in the Zhuangzi (referring to Master Zhuang, aka Master Chuang or Chuang-tzu). Introduce him/the work, select a few major ideas to explain, providing concluding reflections.
- Read the Zhuangzi Burton Watson – Chuang Tzu_ Basic Writings-Columbia University Press (1996)1
- Read an introduction by Ashton Ng to Master Zhuang’s ideas: the-busy-teachers-handbook-to-teaching-the-zhuangzi (2)
- Write a paper primarily using the main primary source (the original writings provided).
- You can also cite the one secondary source I provide but it should not be your main source. It is the second most important.
- You may consult one or two other encyclopedias online and cite them as your third most important source.
- Quality is more important than length but write a complete piece. Longer is okay.
- Proofread (small mistakes) and edit (so it reads well).
- Short quotes, a few longer ones, paraphrasing all work. Just cite your source.
- Essays should be typed in 12-point font with a simple, clean font such as Times New Roman. Use 1” inch margins on all sides and double-space the text.
- Excluding citations, essays should be a minimum of 1,000 words, or four pages in length.
- Essays should provide specific examples and use evidence in answering the questions. This includes citing sources, either with direct quotes or summarized information. As a general rule of thumb, essays should have at least one citation per paragraph. Essays should avoid lengthy or block quotations.
- Source citations should use a commonly accepted citation style such as MLA or Chicago. You should choose one of these citation styles from the outset and use it consistently throughout your essay
