Democracy is a word that appeared many years ago and can be used to describe a system of governance where power is held by people in two possible ways: either directly or through representatives elected by the citizens. It originally comes from the Greek words “demos”-people and “kratos”-rule, which can explain Athenian democracy, where citizens were allowed to engage directly in various decision-making processes, participate in assemblies, and have their “say” in the adoption of different laws and policies. This direct type of democracy became the groundwork for the establishment of modern interpretations and concepts of democratic regimes. Subsequently, philosophers and political theorists have provided a wide range of justifications for the democratic type of governance, which has influenced the modern structures of society.
First of all, one of the main examples of justification is the social contract theory, which takes its roots from Tomas Hobbes, John Locke, and Jean-Jacques Rousseau. According to them, people in their natural state set up a social contract to create a government that will ensure their security and protect their rights and freedoms together with the promotion of their well-being and prevention of crises and instabilities.
