Exploring the Representation of ‘Life’ and ‘Spirit’ in Virginia Woolf’s Mrs. Dalloway and F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby.

Research Essay: 2000 words

Type: Research-based Assignment

Task Description:

This assessment primarily covers the set texts of Virginia Woolf and F. Scott Fitzgerald. It will also briefly refer to the World War 1 poets and Katherine Mansfield’s Short Stories.

Your essay will be comparative. You must discuss in detail :

‘Life is not a series of gig lamps symmetrically arranged; but a luminous halo, a semi-transparent envelope surrounding us from the beginning of consciousness to the end. Is it not the task of the novelist to convey this varying, this unknown and uncircumscribed spirit, whatever aberration or complexity it may display, with as little mixture of the alien and external as possible?’ Virginia Woolf, “Modern Fiction”, 1925. The full essay is found in the Assessment Module.

Explain how and why the writers represent ‘Life’ and ‘Spirit’.

You are also asked to make brief reference to any of the assigned short stories of Katherine Mansfield and any of the assigned poets/poems of the War poets to support the argument of your thesis. You need to show you have read and understood the short stories and the poets/poems. Your references to the short stories and poems need not be of great length, but enough to satisfy the assessment as a reference to the above works in relation to the theme of your thesis statement.

Assessment Notes:

  1. The assessment asks you to discuss the ways that literature responds to a time and place. It specifically requires you to relate the books to their contexts, with a reference to the poetry or a short story. You should use your understanding of context to explain the writing but not reduce the writing to its context.
  2. You must demonstrate your understanding of the key concepts of modernism and modernity.
  3. You must discuss form (i.e. how the writing is presented) as well as theme and context.
  4. Your essay must have a clear argument.
  5. The essay must be researched and show a relevant understanding of the academic scholarship available for each writer and the period. You will need to read refereed academic articles, chapters and/or books and use what you learn from these to address the discussion question. Use academic sources. AI will be carefully scrutinised. Plagiarism is unacceptable and has consequences.
  6. You will also need to research key terms and concepts crucial to your method (what you do) and the contexts of the fiction.
