The purpose of the course paper is to provide you an opportunity to delve deeply into our core theme of ways of knowing. As we’ve seen, each author and each poet we’ve spent time with approaches the world in a singular manner. Each has a unique way of knowing whose contours we’ve been steadily teasing out and discussing. In so doing, we’ve also identified some common elements that cut across their respective orientations. These include (though are not limited to):
** attentiveness and responsiveness to the world, to life in its many manifestations
** persistence in thinking, contemplating, inquiring: they continually ‘face’ the world
rather than turn away from it
** a dynamic of wonder and concern
** enacting a ‘heightened’ attitude as contrasted with the natural attitude in which
humans typically go about their daily affairs; these writers and poets enact a kind of
intensity, involvement, engagement with life that positions them to perceive and feel
things from a broader, or ‘heightened’, perspective
