Factors That Impact Sports Participation on Academic Performance in College Students

The purpose of this assignment is to, 1) report what you found through your research, and 2) explain what this information means in the context of your study as well as the broader literature.  A well-written results section is concise, logically ordered, and focused on the most important data related to your research questions. My research questions are How do practice hours affect student-athletes GPA, class participation, and study hours? How can teachers and coaches help support students with the best academic and athletic success? How does the longevity of playing a sport and balancing school can affect a student’s athlete mental health over time? When does a lack of social life start impacting student-athletes?

Results – the Results section should include, at minimum, the following items:

1. An introductory paragraph about your general summary of your key findings.

2. A systematic description of your results using figures, charts, and/or tables if you utilized quantitative data.  Each of these items should be labeled consecutively (e.g. Figure 1, Figure 2, Chart 1, Table 1), titled (e.g. Figure 1 – Percent Change in Happiness Per Miles Walked Outside), and have the appropriate labels on the x- and y-axis.  Figures, charts, and tables must be explained in the text.  Having just one chart to explain all of your data is likely insufficient; similarly, having 20+ charts that you explain is likely too much. Use and talk about about at least 10 charts I will include the results in the files section. Related to my research questions above.

4. Do not attempt to interpret your results in this section; the interpretation is for the Conclusions section.

5. Always use the past tense when describing your results.

Conclusions – the Conclusions section should include, at minimum, the following items:

1. An introductory paragraph that highlights your research problem and the major findings that addressed this research problem.

2. An in-depth discussion and interpretation of the principles, relationships, and patterns that emerged in the data.  Describe what your results mean in the context of your study and the broader literature.  This description should involve direct connections to the literature you cited earlier in your paper.  To be consistent, you should discuss/interpret these items in the same order they were listed in the Results section.

3. Describe any unexpected findings.  Be sure to include your interpretation of why this unexpected item(s) appeared and what its relevance is to your overall study.

4. Remember to be careful of making bold claims based on your research results.  Your research results do not prove anything; they can only confirm or reject the research questions at the core of your study.

5. Describe the study’s limitations and weaknesses.  If you ran into issues during your data collection that impacted your overall generalizability then you should state that here.

6. End your paper with a concise summary of the principal implications of the findings of your research.  This summary could include theoretical and practical implications.  Relatedly, you should highlight areas for future research.

Use and talk about about at least 10 charts I will include the results in the files section.
