February 25, 2024  The Perils of Social Media: A Look at Social Thinking and Behavior

Literature review prompt
Your assignment is to turn in a complete, polished draft by October 27th, 11:59 PM. This assignment is similar to Full Article Review, where you reviewed the provided article. This time, your assignment is to conduct a literature search on the research topic that you specified in the Detailed Proposal Topic and review 4 peer-reviewed empirical research articles that you found on your topic.
General Instructions
This is a paper, not just an assignment.
• You will be held accountable for writing clarity, spelling, grammar, word usage.
• Use complete sentences
• Use proper punctuation
• Make sure to choose your words carefully—this is not a conversation, and you have time to revise, so be sure to use words that mean what you think they mean!
• Write concisely! You can say the same thing in two lines or two pages—be sure to
choose the former approach!
Your paper will follow a standard format.
• Start with a Title page
• After the Title page, you will need about 3 pages of content (unless your instructor
says otherwise). Your instructor may set a maximum page length for the content.
• End with a References section.
• Use APA Style throughout.
You will review empirical literature relevant to your research topic.
• Your literature review must summarize and relate to your topic a minimum number of peer-reviewed, empirical primary sources published in scholarly journals. This means that each of these papers must be original research conducted by the authors of the paper.
• You may cite additional papers that do not meet these criteria (reviews, theory/opinion pieces, clinical practice recommendations, etc.), but they do not count towards the required number of sources.
• Required number of sources for this literature review is 4 for this assignment, while published research articles often review as many as 20-30.
Artificial Intelligence
If you used any AI tools for this paper such as ChatGPT, you need to disclose the extent and nature of your AI use. If you do not use AI in your written work, please include the following statement as an author’s note: “No AI tools were used in the production of this paper.”. Please see the Artificial Intelligence section on the syllabus and the syllabus lecture for the policies. Having AI actually write your paper, or any part of it, is considered plagiarism, and the academic honesty policies stated above will apply.

b. Why is this topic interesting or important?
3. Review of 4 empirical article (10 points for each article, 40 in total)
For each article:
a. Why did the authors do this study?
b. What approach did the authors use? What kind of design they used? (Experimental? Correlational? Case study? Etc. Possibly slightly greater detail on their method, if relevant to understanding their conclusions and limitations.)
c. What were their variables?
d. What was their hypothesis? What were the authors expecting to find and why?
e. Who were their participants and how did they conduct the study? What were their measures and procedures?
f. What did the authors actually find?
g. What is important about these findings in the context of your study? In other words, how is it related to your topic?
h. What are the limitations of this study, particularly as they relate to its ability to answer your research question?
4. Integration (10 points)
Tying it all together – Here, you need to consider all the studies you review, and write a short paragraph about,
• At the end of the day, what do we already know? What do we still not know?
• Collectively, what are the gaps/inconsistencies in this body of research based on this literature review?

5. APA style reference page (10 points)

This assignment is (most of) the introduction to the research paper you will develop over the course of this semester. For further guidance on the Introduction section, consult the Summary and Guide to APA Style earlier in this lab manual.
