Project Guidelines
Complete a five page research project based on a piece of artwork, a performance or a body of work by a modern or contemporary artist.
TO RECEIVE FULL CREDIT YOUR ESSAY MUST INCLUDE THE FOLLOWING:
1. Clearly defined thesis statement/argument- You must develop an argument that you prove throughout the body of your paper. Your paper must include a clearly recognizable introduction, body and conclusion.
2. Contextualization- Explain the historical, political, geographical, economic, social, (etc.) circumstances that motivate the artist and/or inform the artwork you are discussing.
3. Historical Analysis- Relate the work of art to movements or concepts that we have discussed throughout this course. Explain how the work may be partially inspired by artists or movements of the past. For example: you might think that the work possesses similar qualities or concepts to Symbolism, Minimalism, Conceptualism, Cubism, etc. You may also compare/contrast the work to that of other artists we have studied.
4. Scholarly References- Choose two outside sources that you will cite in your discussion. The outside sources should support and/or further your argument. You can use any of the articles posted in Canvas or find your own articles. You may use reviews or discussions found in contemporary art magazines or journals.
5. Interpretation- Include your own interpretation of the work. What is the work about? What is the intention of the artist? What does it all mean? Remember, your interpretation can be completely original. It is entirely appropriate to argue against the ideas presented in the articles you choose. This is an excellent way to begin formulating your thesis statement.
8. Images- Include images of every piece of artwork you discuss.
9. BONUS – Use a discussion of the formal elements to further your argument. (This is not required, but it may help to strengthen your writing).
Note: At least 5 solid pages of writing is required. Image and bibliography pages are extra.
