CITATIONS

This paper needs to follow MLA rules for citation. Although many of you will use other formats in your professional lives, for this assignment I want everyone to use MLA (Modern Language Association). Rules for MLA can be found on many cites on line; however, I STRONGLY recommend that use the OWL at PERDUE site for up-to-date rules on using MLA. Every type of resource that you may use will be listed there, from books to conversations with friends.

NUMBER AND TYPES OF REQUIRED SOURCES

Because these are historical topics, for the most part, which have been discussed over a long period of time, it will be necessary to include contemporaneous sources (sources written when the event actually happened) and sources from the years since, you should have the following types and minimum number of sources:

  • 2-3: Factual accounts from when the event took place, or as close to as possible
    • look at newspapers and other publications from when and where the events took place
    • these publications are available through on-line sources
  • 2-4: Sources discussing developments and theories since the event occurred
    • look at articles, tv programs, books, etc. that look back to the event from a perspective years later
    • anniversaries of the event’s occurrance are good places to start
    • see if new information has been added to the story’s development
  • 1-3: Modern, contemporary sources including information from recent times
    • depending on the date of your event, this might be the same as the previous category
    • for older topics, more than 5 years, this is necessary

WHAT SOURCES CAN BE USED

1) You MAY use any legitimate source: newspapers, magazines, journals, books, non-entertinment tv shows, documentaries, textbooks, classes, etc. As long as the source’s authorship can be researched and it seems serious, not just some internet person’s mopinion, you may use it.

2) You MAY NOT use encyclopedia, entertainment-based tv shoes or movies, random websites by people who are not professional writers or researchers.

3) If you are writing about a controversy, you should have sources from the different points of view, so this may make it necessary for you have more sources.

PICTURE CITATIONS

Every picture, visual, chart, etc. that is used in your paper must have a citation. There are two ways that you may complete this requirement – in-text or in the bibliography.

Here are the rules for using visuals in your paper:

1) Visuals should be placed as close to the text that they are illustrating as possible

2) Each visual must have a FIGURE # and a caption explaining what the picture means. Visuals are assigned chronological numbers throughout the paper. So, the fist picture would be Fig. 1; the next would be Fig. 2 and so on. These numbers must be in order: 1, then 2, then 3, etc.

3) A simple caption, explaining the visual needs to be provided: Portrait of Albert de Salvo in Prison

4) CITATION OPTIONS: 1 – In your bibliography, after you finish the textual sources, have a section called VISUALS or PICTURES or something like that. Then, using correct bibliographical format, list your visuals. In the annotation you can explain which visual it was OR 2 – In the paper, under the picture and after the caption, include the bibliographic information for the picture there. If you use this method you do not have to include the source in the bibliography.

5) Perdue OWL will provide examples.
