After more than a decade of constant struggle, in which civil rights activists were successful in abolishing legal American apartheid (the 1964 Civil Rights Act, the 1965 Voting Rights Act and the 1968 Fair Housing Act, etc.), the Civil Rights movement sputtered, fractured, and was superseded by the Black Power movement. Define and identify the timeframe of the Civil Rights and Black Power movements. Where did Black Power come from? Discuss the role of Malik Shabazz/Malcom X in the construction of the proto-ideology and social movement known as Black Power. Define Black Power. Discuss its dominant strategic features. Explain why and how campaigns for civil rights gave way to battles for Black Power. In what ideological and strategic ways did Black Power break with the Civil Rights movement’s philosophy and practices? Identify and discuss at least one specific event, key personality and organization involved in the Black Power movement. How did Black Power contribute to African Americans’ advancement? Be sure to identify and discuss some of the contemporary legacies of the Black Power movement.
