The major project for this course is to develop a public policy analysis about an issue of recent public interest. You will complete this project in stages throughout the course, receiving feedback from your instructor after each stage. Your work throughout these stages will culminate in Module 6 with a final paper and presentation of your public policy analysis recommendation. This project offers an opportunity to apply Bardach’s Eightfold Path of policy analysis to a current public policy issue that is of interest to you.
The deliverable for this stage in the project is an annotated bibliography and analysis of the sources you have found to support the public policy issue you are researching. The goal of this annotated bibliography is to summarize and critically analyze what the sources say about the issue, identifying common themes, divergent perspectives, and gaps in what is known or reported regarding the issue. This requires higher-order skills and more time than simply reporting or repeating what has been said, so please plan accordingly. To help you be successful, please review the research guide from NLU’s Library and Learning Service, which contains information about how to conduct an annotated bibliography, including searching and writing strategies.
Your written assignment should be about 1,500-1,750 words in length (six to eight pages, not including the title page). Please limit your word count for each annotation to 200-300 words and provide a one-page executive summary that synthesizes common themes you have identified across your sources. You may choose to organize your annotated bibliography around themes that emerged in the sources you have read and analyzed. A minimum of 10 sources are required for this assignment, though you may use the five sources identified earlier in Project Stage 1 as part of the 10 sources. The remaining sources should include a mix of scholarly, peer-reviewed journal articles, news articles, policy reports, and other credible, professional sources. Please use databases and other research tools available through NLU’s Library and Learning Support to locate these sources. Your written assignment should follow APA format.
