Use Module 3 readings and resources. Use them to answer in 750-900 words one of the five following questions about Black Catholic worship presented here.
1) In Chapter 1, Costen identifies four streams of tradition that inform African American Christian worship. Describe the traditions and discuss how the four flow together in African American Catholic worship.
2) Identify principles of Black prayer/ritual that appear in Roman Catholic worship. Explain how the ritual elements call Black Catholic assemblies to full and active participation in a) the Opening Rites, b) Liturgy of the Word, c) Liturgy of the Eucharist and d) Closing Rites of the Sunday Eucharistic Liturgy.
3) Thinking of the Church’s evangelizing mission, describe how full, conscious and active participation of the Catholic faithful at Sunday Eucharist might inspire full, conscious and active participation of African Americans in their everyday lives in the communities and society at-large.
4) Describe principles of liturgical worship promoted by Vatican Council II and Black cultural elements that developed in the late 20th century. Discuss how inculturation (Lumas) led to significant changes in the celebration of Sunday Mass in African American communities of faith.
5) Discuss why it is important for the preacher and the people that preparation of the Sunday homily begin with the Assembly.
