This assignment, I have to response to a peer, this is her answer to the above question.
- Provide interpreter services. Being able to communicate effectively is a huge priority amongst many people but even so for ethnic elders. Confusion on what is being said can have a lasting effect. There are many translation services and in some offices there is a poster on the wall letting you know the office provides this service or lets you know where to go to get the help. The office I work in has a very large Spanish speaking community as well as Chinese. We have three bilingual staff to help assist and also one Chinese speaking staff. It has made a huge impact on the ability for the patient to receive the care they deserve. When an elder is comfortable with what they are hearing and can understand then they can make decisions without fears.
2.) Provide training! I cannot stress this enough! We in live in a very diverse world with may cultures! Providing staff with training on cultures and how they receive treatment is essential to good care. Not one culture may be the same in how they receive care or what their religious allows to do as far as care. Having knowledge how different cultures approach care and services can better allow professionals to make an educated treatment plan and then present the patient with the tools they need to make a choice. This can be in all aspects of care. We cannot assume that what one culture would do would be what we may do, so having an open mind and being trained to handle different views allows healthcare professional to have a different level of respect all of cultures.
There are no refences for my post as I just based my opinions of my experience in the medical field.
