1. Argument. What role or roles does your selection of history or material culture play in
the film, and why is it significant to the overall intent of the film? You will need to argue
the intent of the film as well here.
2. Evidence. Be specific in selecting the evidence for your argument. Pick a scene or two
to establish the context for your argument. Remember that the importance of historical
attributes or the relevance of material culture are often established very early on in a film,
and sometimes through very subtle means, such as references to historical figures or event
and in the case of material culture actual things like technology, fashion, or patterned
behavior around material objects.
3. Conclusion. Although the goal is to develop the “so what” to your argument from the
very beginning, your conclusion should drive the trajectory of your argument to its
logical end.
