Module III – Paper instructions
Please write a paper (about two-three pages long: 600-900 words), examining the components of music of two (or more) pieces of your choice.
This is a great opportunity to explore and learn about music that interests you.
Since many of you are not music majors, I do not expect you to write at a music major’s level.
Please use the knowledge we have acquired so far from Modules I, II, and III to write your paper.
You can consider the following:
1. History of the piece – when did the composer write it? At what stage of his/her career he/she was? What was going on in the society at the time he/she composed that musical work?
2. Rhythm
3. Melody
4. Harmony
5. Instrumentation, Orchestration, and Texture
6. Form
7. How does the music add and shape your visual and emotional experience of the work? Why do you like this work? What is it that makes it interesting to you?
You can choose pieces from the composers we have studied in Modules II and III. You can also consider the textbooks in the Getting Started Folder and Module II (Understanding Music-Past and Present Chapter 6) when choosing composers and musical works.
For those of you that would like to follow along with a musical score, you can navigate and find scores of your chosen pieces www.imslp.org
!(PLEASE WRITE ON RICHARD STRAUSS)!
For the introduction you can start off by mentioning Richard’s history such as what age he started, what made him be an artist, etc. “1. History of the piece – when did the composer write it? At what stage of his/her career he/she was? What was going on in the society at the time he/she composed that musical work?”
I really want you to use his symphonic poem of “Death and Transfiguration (1888-89) – Strauss wrote it after he recovered from a serious illness.”
Follow the remaining of 2. Rhythm
3. Melody
4. Harmony
5. Instrumentation, Orchestration, and Texture
6. Form
7. How does the music add and shape your visual and emotional experience of the work? Why do you like this work? What is it that makes it interesting to you?
Using His symphonic poem of “death and transfiguration” Please use
