Assignment 1. “Movie Response”
Find the document entitled, “Pop Music Filmography.PDF” found in this week’s Module. This document is a list of movies that directly or indirectly relate to topics covered in this course.
Each student will choose 1 movie from this list to view and write about.
For each movie, a typewritten response of no less than two (2) double-spaced pages must be submitted. Your response must include thoughts, opinions, and specific observations, which must relate to topics from the textbook or lectures. Relationships must be drawn between each Theme from Chapter 1 of your textbook and topics presented in the movie. At least one paragraph each must be dedicated to each Theme.
Assignment 3. “Cause and Effect” The goal is to find the catalysts of change in American popular music as they relate to the five themes discussed in Chapter 1 (a. Listening and Analysis, b. Music and Identity, c. Music and Technology, d. Music Business, e. Centers and Peripheries.)
Examine Chapters 1 through 4 and identify a total of 15 changes to any of the five themes. (Not 15 for each theme, 15 total!) For each change, determine at least one cause for that change to create cause-and-effect statements and indicate which theme or themes it relates to and why.
Type your cause-and-effect statements using the format shown in the example below:
Cause: In 1925 the electronic microphone was invented and became widely available.
Effect: After 1925 singers could record their voices at much lower volumes to capture an intimacy and expressivity that was previously impossible. This new style of singing was called “crooning”, and singers such as Gene Austen and Bing Crosby were the forebears of this style.
Theme: Music & Technology – Because technological advancements made a new musical style possible.
