Homework Assignment #1: Response to Intervention (RTI) & Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS)

Homework Assignment #1: Response to Intervention (RTI) & Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS)

The Homework Assignment #1 Description and Resources are located here.

This is where, through a close and careful reading, you will learn about the assignment requirements, and where you will upload an attached file for grading.

[This HW assignment may be done by individuals or teams of 2 persons; find a partner with a quick post on the Q&A Forum!]

Drawing on ALL of the readings and resources from Units 2 and 3, design a specific RTI / MTSS model for your (actual or hypothetical) school. The document, while research-based, needs to be written using practical language as a hands-on document, NOT as a theoretical/research type of document.  Do this assignment in MS WORD, using a total of approximately 5 to 7 pages. Assignment length really depends on how you execute the requirements of the assignment. The document you are creating could be inserted into a school handbook for faculty and staff or posted as an online resource for parents to read, so that they better understand your school’s RTI model. Be sure to identify your audience(s).

You may include some brief bulleted lists and small diagrams/flow charts/tables as appropriate. But the document needs to talk not only about RTI / MTSS in general, but clearly explain with explicit practical guidance how your school’s program works (including examples). Make sure you explain not only the larger organization of the RTI / MTSS system, but also the working details of all components, including service delivery, decision-making processes (problem solving, standard protocol, etc.), staffing (clarify roles of general and special education personnel) and timetables, etc. It is important that you use narrative language to introduce any visual / graphic information. Never insert a chart, table, or graph, etc., without specific identifying information.

Be certain to include the following and do not forget to consider the guidance provided in the Course Home Module: Grading & The Aristotelian Triptych:

  1. APA Title Page
  2. Introduction / overview with purpose, expected learning outcomes, and scope of the document content (“tell them what you’re going to tell them”),
  3. Basic concepts from Federal and State law/regulations on RTI / MTSS to establish context,
  4. Detailed, practical, how-it-works presentation of your school’s RTI / MTSS system. This is the main part of the paper. Assume that this is for a traditional public school, but make sure that you clearly identify the school’s grade levels and make sure your RTI / MTSS design is appropriate for those levels,
  5. Identify and integrate a content area focus and specific procedures of your RTI / MTSS program, e.g., reading, math, writing, etc.,
  6. Specifics related to universal screening, progress monitoring assessments, data presentation,
  7. Resources for teachers, parents, administrators to access additional information on using RTI in accordance with your school’s RTI / MTSS plan,
  8. In-text citations to support narrative sections (minimum of 5 from at least 3 sources using APA format),
  9. Conclusion with key summary points (“tell them what you told them”),
  10. References page: APA format,
  11. Reflection from both partners with brief discussion of specific assignment responsibilities and thoughts on the advantages / disadvantages of working together.
