Identify two online articles involving biology that present opposing viewpoints published since
June 1, 2016. One must be from a reputable source (U.S. Government website, U.S. University
website, Primary science website, etc.). Keep in mind – it’s the controversy and how to resolve
it that we are interested in. Do not plagiarize! Use your own words. Evidence of plagiarism
will result in a zero on the assignment. And DO NOT use quotes in your paper – I need to see
that you can explain things in your own words! Write your paper like a story, don’t use
numbered lists or bullet points.
First Section, the articles:
1. Briefly explain what each article is about. (10pts)
2. Clearly identify what you object to in the controversial article (save the why for #2
below) (5pts)
Second Section, the factual evidence:
1. Biological Content: What is the relevant biology in this controversy? Don’t just ask
questions, provide some actual facts. Use the reputable article and the class textbook as
your references. You will need to include the page numbers that provide you with your
information (remember, don’t plagiarize and no quotes!) (10pts)
2. Your Opinion: clearly and thoroughly write about your opinion with reference to the facts
from your textbook and reputable article to support it. (5pts)
3. The Consequences: What are some social, economic, and/or ethical impacts of this
controversy? How will people be affected if they adopt the view presented in the
controversial article? How will people be affected if they adopt your view instead? (5pts)
Third Section, references:
Use a consistent format for all of your citations (APA, MLA, science, etc.) You must also
indicate where you used your sources in the body of your text. This should be done via
parentheses, here’s an example using your textbook (Singh-Cundy and Shin 2015, p.216). It
should be clear what information you describe and where it comes from and that you are
consistent. Here’s an example of a science reference format using your textbook:
