I attached a past sample essay for this specific question from this class.
Essay Topic: How are immersive technologies, like Virtual and Augmented Reality, transforming our encounters with cultural heritage collections and redefine our relationship with the materiality of objects? Discuss the implications for both visitors and memory institutions.
Instructions & Guidelines
For all essay topics, discuss using at least two examples from cultural heritage practice (where you can complement the literature with examples from your personal experience)
Please note that when selecting a case study or example to analyse for your essay, you cannot use the same that you used for your other assignment.
As you may have noticed there is no single book or article that will answer these questions. This is deliberate. The questions are designed to force you to synthesise your knowledge and understanding from different topics and sources. Ultimately there is no right or wrong answer; you have to use your own creativity and judgement supported by your examples and balance any stifling of innovation against the benefits (real or supposed) that developments in technology may bring to cultural heritage organisations.
To answer these questions appropriately you will all need to think about the different types of technology in general that each essay questions refers to, but crucially, relate these to cultural heritage activities. Use the material from the guest lectures, class sessions, site visits (organised and self-led) and readings to support your argument.
When referring to specific case studies and examples, make sure that you integrate these in an examination of the wider issues (both theoretical and practical) about the use of technology in the cultural sector.
You are expected to submit a fully referenced essay. Check the course bibliography and the references of the weekly sessions for readings to get you started.
Submission Instructions and Checklist
The essay should be 2500 words (with the usual +/-10% that applies in the word count) (excluding title page and bibliography but including any in-text references and footnotes). It should be submitted (without your name, only with your student ID) to Moodle by the date and time specified.
