You will pick a cultural text such as a film, novel, musical album, or video game and scrape data about it from Twitter, YouTube, or Reddit. You will produce a social network visualization of the data. As a DH practitioner you will analyze and examine the digital public’s perception of a cultural text—connecting your own analysis of the text with discussion of it on a social media platform. In doing so you will place a cultural text in broader digital context to understand how digital publics make sense of culture in a contemporary, global digital age. You will discuss what this illustrates about the value of data analytic tools in analyzing contemporary cultural texts from a critical, interdisciplinary Humanities perspective.
How are mental health issues among teenagers represented and discussed in cultural texts, and what insights can computational textual analysis provide? use the Netflix show 13 reasons why as one of the four sources
You will submit a 5-7-page final project narrative that includes an overall description of your cultural text, a data visualization, and analysis that is accessible to a general audience and includes scholarly sources. A scholarly source is defined as a peer-reviewed source published in an academic journal or a book published by an academic publishing house. You will scrape data from either YouTube, Twitter, or Reddit for this project using the platforms Netlytic or Communalytic. You will then use Gephi or Netlytic to produce a data visualization using your scraped data.
