General instructions
In this research paper you need to present a critical examination of a key issue in global politics. Choose a
topic that you will enjoy and for which you have significant interest. You can use one of two approaches:
1. Using a theory to explain and better understand an empirical topic in global politics;
2. Using an empirical topic in global politics to explain the merits and limitations of a theory.
Although it is strongly recommended that you pick one of the theories covered in the first part of the
course, you can consider choosing one we did not discuss in the course. Please discuss this with your
T.A. or the instructor if that is something you are considering.
The paper must be structured around a clear research question. The purpose of the paper is then to
identify a thesis that provides an answer to this question, and demonstrate the value of this thesis through
an argumentative demonstration. A strong structure is essential to a successful demonstration: make sure
that the different elements of the demonstration are presented in a logical and coherent manner.
In the introductory paragraph, state the question, and state your thesis concisely (you may also give an
overview of the various steps or aspects of your argumentation). Make sure you break up the main part of
your paper into paragraphs and sections that cover different steps or aspects of your argumentation. In the
conclusion, summarize the most important results of your analysis (you can also point to the wider
implications of the analysis).
To test whether the different components of your demonstration are indeed arguments (i.e., that they
participate in answering the question), ask yourself if someone could disagree with you. Each argument
will be more convincing if you anticipate potential criticisms from someone who might disagree with
you. Make sure that the thesis you are trying to demonstrate is not too general. Format and content instructions
• The paper should be no more than 3,000 words (excluding footnotes, cover page and
bibliography); this limit of 3,000 words is an absolute maximum and will be strictly enforced;
• Your paper must include a cover page with your name, the course number and title, and the date;
• The paper must be double-spaced with a 11 or 12 point standard font;
• Make sure to use a professional citation style throughout, for example APA or Chicago. A list of
references (bibliography) must also be included at the end for all the sources that are referenced in
your text (guide available on the Concordia Library website:
https://library.concordia.ca/help/citing/index.php);
• Be concise: a longer description or discussion is not necessarily a better one;
• Be clear, use full sentences, and do not use abbreviated language without defining it; 7-10 sources
