Description of Project:

This project requires the student to conduct a formal review of literature concerning an area pertaining to nursing, a clinical nursing issue, or healthcare issue related to nursing is required of students completing NURS 2062 and NURS 2063.  The area of interest, clinical issue, or research problem may focus on content related to this course or current trends in nursing or health care. The PICOT, current and relevant nursing research-based articles, article summaries, and presentation are due together in NURS 2062 on the designated date listed on the course calendar. Students can use the PICOT questions developed in NURS 2020 or choose another topic. 

Learning Outcomes: 

1.     Conduct literature review to obtain evidence-based articles from reliable peer reviewed nursing journals or by nursing author.

2.     Summarize evidence-based practice presented in the peer reviewed nursing journal.

Components required on due date posted on course calendar:

·      Title of the project should be placed as a question on title page in APA format: 

o   include problem question, your name, course number, school, and date. 

o   Examples:

a. “In mechanically ventilated ICU patients, does positioning the patient in semi-fowlers result in a lower incidence of nosocomial pneumonia when compared to the supine position?”

b. What are best practices to prevent ventilator associated pneumonia?

·      Summarize the 4 articles.  

o   The title of the article should be placed on top of the page prior to the summary written, in APA format; 

o   Do not place the article reference on the top of the page, title only.

o   The article summary should be a total of 2-4 paragraphs consisting of research summary (purpose of the research, how research was conducted, what was found, etc.) and relevance to nursing practice (This research is relevant to nursing practice because …………). 

o   Information should be written in your own words or paraphrasing and should be cited in APA format. Use direct quotes only when necessary. The relevance to nursing practice article summary should include 1-2 paragraphs explaining how the article relates to the problem question and how it impacts nursing.

·      4 relevant research-based nursing articles dated within the last 5 years. 

o   Look for key words to determine if the article is research based: 

§  Literature review, sample, methods, data analysis, conclusions and discussions. 

o   At least 3 of the articles must be from a nursing journal. One article can be from a peer reviewed interdisciplinary journal if one author is clearly cited as an RN.

 

·      Problem Question Rationale and Summary 

o   On a separate page, write 1-2 paragraphs explaining if the review findings answered the stated question. Provide rationales based on findings.

·      Reference page listing all 4 articles in APA format. 

 

General Information regarding selection of article from nursing journals.

·      Journal articles selected for the literature review need to be related to the topic which is approved by course coordinator. 

·      The Electronic databases such as CINAHL, Pro Quest, Pub Med, or Medline can be used to find published peer reviewed journal articles that are research based. These databases may be accessed via the James C. Bolton library, at home, or at our local hospital libraries.

Submission Directions:

1.     Submit a paper copy of all assignment components in a 1  1.5-inch binder to the nursing office in the appropriate box, by the due date posted on the course calendar. Place a divider between each article summary with corresponding full text article, Problem Question Rationale and Summary, and Reference list.

2.     Late submissions will follow the late assignment policy in the course syllabus.

3.     Sequencing of assignment components:

a.     Title page (in clear pocket on outside of binder front cover)

b.     Copy of rubric placed in pocket inside of front cover with your name on it.

c.     Article summary (Four separated by dividers) followed by a copy of the entire article in alphabetical order by author (same as reference list). 

 

d.     Problem Question Rational and Summary paragraphs

e.     Reference page

f.      Do no put articles or summaries in sheet protectors
