professors points: They should be around 8-10 pages (2000-2,500 words, double-spaced, 12-point font), including footnotes and bibliography. This is a recommended length; you can write more, and I will read it if it is relevant. But an excellent paper does not need to be too long. You are expected to turn in your own work. Plagiarism will lead to a failing grade and disciplinary action! Please upload the paper to Turnitin, otherwise I will consider that you did not submit it.
I have asked the library to buy two books: Mark Trachtenberg’s The Craft of International History: a Guide to Method; and The Rowman & Littlefield Guide to Writing with Sources. Look at them to make your writing more sophisticated. Here is some basic advice:
A good paper should have an argument. Don’t just fill pages with loosely connected information. Try to formulate a specific question and answer it. “World War I” is not a question. “Why did World War I happen?” is a question, but it may be too big to handle in ten pages. “Is Germany to blame for World War I?” now, that’s better (and still there are entire volumes written on the subject). You don’t always need a question (e.g., for a biography) but you should convey to the reader the historical significance of your topic. Why should someone read your paper, what are they going to learn from it?
A good paper should properly cite sources. Back your arguments with evidence, quote and paraphrase as needed. Don’t copy paste material without saying where you found it. Provide complete bibliographic information. Any standard citation system is fine; try Chicago style (https://www.chicagomanualofstyle.org/tools_citationguide.html).
A good paper should be critical about its sources. Don’t accept everything you read. What biases might the authors have? What counterarguments are there? Which account or which interpretation seems more reliable or more convincing? Dare to give your own opinion; but also admit what you don’t know and your limitations as a researcher.
A good paper should tell a good story. Clio is a muse and history is also a non-fictional literary genre. Academic writing shouldn’t be bad or boring. Pay attention to grammar, syntax, and to your writing style.
Enjoy your papers and use them to learn about something that interests you. Good luck!
