- For this Discussion, you should describe how you would do a survey to address your research question, with at least 4 measures. Previously we’ve worked so that your research question can be tested in an experiment, but for this Discussion (only) we will try to design a non-experimental survey that can also be relevant to your research question (without directly testing causation).
- Your research question has 2 variables in it; for non-experimental research those become a “predictor” and the “criterion” (the criterion is the outcome). The variables may have to change to fit into a survey design. For example, studies with research questions about students’ studying for a test (or their reading comprehension) probably should change the outcome to be GPA.
- For this Discussion, you should also identify two additional variables
- The first new variable should be something that’s relevant to the theory you chose and included in your theory paper. Most theories include multiple constructs that could be measured, but for now you just need one.
- The second new variable should be another predictor. It can be anything that’s relevant to your topic, but it should be a categorical variable. If you forget what that means, go back to pages 122-123 in the textbook.
- In the Discussion, you should post:
- First, state your research question/topic again.
- Second, identify your four variables (the 2 from the research question, plus the 2 new ones as described above). Identify each one as a person variable or a situation variable.
- Third, in 3-5 sentences, using what you learned from Chapters 6 and 7, briefly describe the procedure that you could use to collect data from FGCU college students, using a questionnaire/survey that measures the 4 variables that you chose.
- Fourth, describe what measures (i.e., what self-report questions) you would measure the 4 variables. You don’t have to give specific operational definitions like you did in last week’s Discussion, but if there are published scales that have been used in prior research studies, I strongly suggest that you use those scales too. In this Discussion, you would then just say something like, “I would measure self-esteem using the State Self-Esteem Scale (Heatherton & Polivy, 1991).”
