The impact of glimering buldings, man made water falls and other student services special effects has changed the role of higher education. Carey (2015) writes how student debt college students of today are taking on for a basic education. and how the hybrid university according to Hutchins is more concerned with competing with other universities for status and money. The rise of funding for student support services, luxury dorms, multi-million dollar fitness centers, complete with kyaking streams, climbing walls, huge sports programs, all have led to a culture of money where universities compete to attract students. Trachtenberg became president of George Washington in 1987 and spent the next decades making GW into a prestigious institution not so much by academic scholarship achievements but by building signs of luxury, the value of signs of wealth, prestige, and power. Trachtenberg convinced people GW was worth more simply because it charged more. Do you think this is the case today in our colleges and universities that we are paying more for simply prestige and not for an actual education? Do you think we want the appearance of prestige rather than the actual product?
