How does sleep quality influence the academic performance of medical students in the Gulf countries

Have you ever wondered how many hours an adult individual truly needs to perform at their best? Sleep disturbance has a direct relationship to subpar academic performance among medical students in Gulf countries. Lifestyle, with the increased amount of stress that medical students face on a regular basis, has been the number one factor in sleep deprivation. As medical students sleep less, their performance decreases, which increases their anxiety and leads to a vicious cycle of poor health. An overwhelming body of evidence suggests sleep deprivation is interconnected not only to mental health problems but also to overall health in the long term. Medical students experience cognitive impairment, emotional instability, weakened immune systems, memory problems, and the list goes on. Although these medical students are inspired to be future physicians, which means they truly understand the effects of sleep on their bodies, they continue to engage in poor lifestyles. The overload of work does not decrease as their careers progress but, on the contrary, increases as they face different stages. It is important to shed light on the significance of sleep quality, sleep quantity, sleep regularity, and sleep phase scheduling among medical students. This literature review’s goal is to increase awareness about the correlation between adequate sleep and medical student performance.


Some populations do not give themselves proper hours of sleep, such as medical students. The reason behind the poor sleep of medical students is the academic requirements along with fluctuating schedules. A study performed on Arabian Gulf University medical students found that 75% of students suffer from poor sleep patterns (Abdeen et al., 2013). The study emphasized that their poor sleep schedule is due to the pressure of academic demands from assignments, exams, and PBL, among others. Additionally, it discussed that students could address the problem of poor sleep through counseling units and advisory systems. Moreover,  Another study shows that due to the overload on medical students, they tend to experience poor sleep quality (Sleep Disturbances among Medical Students: A Global Perspective | Journal of Clinical Sleep Medicine, n.d.). This study clearly emphasized that understanding the etiology of sleep disorders is crucial for improving sleep quality. It mentioned that the causes of poor sleep may be intrinsic, such as stress, overthinking, and worry at bedtime, or environmental, such as the large number of tasks that must be completed in a short period, including exams and homework. However, neither study answered an important question: how the sleep patterns of medical students vary between the years (Years 1-5).
