1. (Revised) Research question (This is the sole element that can remain the same in the two assignments or can be slightly amended)
2. Drawing on the literature review, propose a suggested conceptual/analytical/theoretical framework or approach/hypotheses or set of theoretical expectations (approx. 700-800 words)
3. Proposed methodology, data, and case selection justification (approx. 300-400words)
4. Suggested plan of analysis (to be carried out at a later date) (approx. 300 words)
5. Bibliography (this bibliography does not have a recommended number of sources but can include sources you have already cited in Part 1 and/or new ones; it does not count toward the word limit)
In addition, you will want to consult some methods and research design textbooks, to help you with some of the key concepts in social sciences research. For instance, you can consult one of the books co-authored by Heath and Halperin and other methods textbooks focused on specific methods you want to use in your work. Any of the methods books geared toward politics and international relations that SAGE Publishing has published will be great. SAGE Methods has great resources, too.
Please keep in mind that the sample research proposals included below were submitted for a different module where the research proposal was a single assignment (not broken up into two separate parts) and was longer by quite a few words. So please only use these proposals as indicative of the structure and possible content a proposal. These sample proposals are by no means ‘perfect’, nor are they intended for self-assessment. They are just for inspiration.
