Some Pointers regarding the Edward Baptist interview
- This is an interview, so its written in a question and answer format; it should be in plainer language than a written ‘academic article’
- The thesis of the interview is right on page 1 and 2:
- Of the many myths told about American slavery, one of the biggest is that it was an archaic practice that only enriched a small number of men….But as with so many stories about slavery, this is untrue. Slavery, particularly the cotton slavery that existed from the end of the 18th century to the beginning of the Civil War, was a thoroughly modern business, one that was continuously changing to maximize profits. (Baptist, 1-2)
- ‘reproductive labor’ – the work that goes into creating and sustaining human life, i.e. giving birth, breastfeeding, cooking, cleaning, raising kids, etc.
