Write an essay which
is at least 4 pages in length which makes use of at least three sources (including one of the essays in our
textbook) to discuss the work of either John Muir or Rachel
Carson, using their essay in our textbook and the outside sources you will
locate through your research.

The essay will
make an argument about how their ideas and their work were important to how the
conservationist/environmentalist movements began, and why those ideas are still
important today. Remember that you are not
writing a report about the individual you choose, but an essay about
their work and their relevance to what we know about the issues
which are still facing us in the present day.
In the case of Muir and Carson, their work led to changes in
laws and policy regarding how our natural resources are protected, and while those
changes have been invaluable over the years, new threats exist today
which environmentalists fear may have a significant negative impact. Discussing those current changes and potential threats is how
you will bring their work and ideas into a contemporary light, and should be the
main component of your essay.
The paper must be written and cited properly according to
the rules of MLA style, so make use of our textbook, A Pocket Style Manual, the
information available on the library’s website on the NECC home page, and the
documents I will upload in our course content to help you understand how to
cite your sources properly, both in-text and on a works cited page.
Both a first and a final
draft of the essay must be submitted in order to earn credit for the
assignment. The essay must meet the minimum length requirement in order to earn
a passing grade. The number of pages does not include the works cited
page.
