1) What struck you the most about each place that Smith visited and the people and history he encountered there? Be sure to discuss all seven locations in detail.
2) In the epilogue, Smith argues that “The history of slavery is the history of the United States. It is not peripheral to our founding; it was central to it.” Keeping this argument in mind, looking at the six places that he visited within the United States, what location do you believe does the best job of reckoning with our past? Why do you think that this approach is more effective than the others? What struck you the most about the history that he encountered there?
