Each of the works we’ve read so far have focused on elements of Southern culture that might be
described as “Gothic.” This term refers to works that seem horrifying, exaggerated, outlandish,
grotesquely humorous, strange, and/or extreme. Using an example from each of the two authors we
have read—O’Connor and Berendt—discuss how these authors create an intriguing and sometimes
disturbing view of the South. This essay should be 3-5 pages.
Essays should be proofread and edited for spelling, punctuation, grammar, sentence and paragraph
structure, and correct use of MLA style. You should include a title that indicates your subject and
argument, an introduction that spells out your thesis and the name(s) of the work(s) you’re going to
discuss, body paragraphs that have correctly-cited quotations from the literary work(s), and a “So
what?” conclusion that tells readers why they should care about your argument. You also must include a works cited page in MLA style, which should be on a separate page but not in a separate attachment
