The goal of this assignment is to develop a research design for your
project. The individual assignment can be related to the topic of your
Master’s thesis, but this is not mandatory.
Qualitative Assignment: We want you to prepare a
report that summarizes the research design of your qualitative research
project. In the assignment, we ask you to include (at least) the
following information:
- [ ] Introduce your research problem and research question (e.g., problematize the literature, what is the gap you found?)
- [
] Do a critical review of at least 3 academic articles that are
relevant to your topic (i.e., integrate and compare the literature you
have read, and make a case for the relevance of your own research) - [ ] Write a preliminary method section in which you. Justify your research method/research design.
- [ ] Explain the research philosophy that this research project adopts.
- [
] If your data collection relies on interviews: Prepare an interview
protocol (introduction, questions, etc.), and make clear how it is
connected to the literature review and your research question. - [ ] Explain your sampling approach and justify your decision.
- [
] Explain the validation procedures you are going to use (e.g., how to
increase credibility, dependability, conformability, transferability?) - [
] Conclude by discussing the limitations of this research design? Can
they be mitigated with the help of an alternative research approach
(i.e., quantitative research approach)?
Maximum word count is 2,000 words (excluding
references and appendices). It is up to you to decide how many words you
need for each part. Make sure that you include relevant literature
(e.g., that is offered in this course) to support your choices.
Submission: Hand in your assignment via Canvas until Sunday**, March
3, 23:59**. A hardcopy is not needed. Use Times New Roman, font size 12,
line spacing 1.5 for the assignment. Please use the Academy of
Management Journal’s style guide or APA style for referencing.
Assessment criteria: The assignment will be evaluated against the following criteria which are broken down in the matrix in Appendix 1:
-
Specific: this means that you will need to be specific in your
claims. For instance, a claim like “the low reliability of the
measurement reduces the quality of the results” is too unspecific. In
this case, you need to specify which quality criteria of research design
is affected by reliability. -
Informed: this means that you have to provide justification for the
opinions you express by grounding them in the prescribed literature for
this course (of course, you can also use additional academic papers to
justify your opinions). -
In-depth: this means that your analysis and interpretation should go
beyond a conclusion that can be reached without reading your report. For
instance, a claim like “this study did not examine the entire world, so
it has limited generalizability” is too superficial. You need to show
that you really understand and master the methodological literature,
such that your claims are thoughtful and backed up by detailed
argumentations. -
Systematic: this means that, rather than randomly/eclectically
combining pieces of information for your analysis, you explicitly apply
the methodological frameworks offered by the prescribed literature to
your research project. -
Critical: this means that you should evaluate and discuss the quality
of the methodological choices made, rather than merely summarizing/
describing what you are doing. -
Comparative: this means that you have to compare and contrast the
methodological approach within your research design with an alternative
research approach. Ideally, by the end of the essay, you will arrive at a
conclusion about the quality of your research design and argumentation
of how it can benefit (if at all) from an alternative research approach. -
Communication and structure: this means that you have to present your analysis and application in a logical and coherent way.
RESEARCH QUESTION : How Urban family businesses with different entry
modes meet the challenges of internationalization while maintaining
their unique ID and values?
In Depth Interviews – 2 in each company, i.e. 10 in total, logically for CEOs
I do qualitative research, multiple case studies and I will do a total of 10 interviews in 5 businesses from my city that I know.
And in case the whole work is not done because I have done my research, I simply haven’t found 3 articles to relate and find the gap.
