Singapore healthcare is evolving as we are facing an ageing population, rising costs of healthcare, and increased patient expectations. Besides that, with the impending rise demand in health services due to increase patient with co-morbidities or complex chronic diseases. However, we have insufficient physician to take care of patient and therefore utilization of nurses in advance practice plays an important role, contributing to enhanced patient outcomes and overall quality of care. APN with expanded practice competency and scope of practice, are in a strategic position to lead the fast changing, pandemic-to-endemic healthcare landscape.
How to improve patient care
– Collaborating with physician and provides care for patient with both acute and chronic conditions.
– Patient education
– Provide collaborative patient care management through serving as a clinical nursing expert in the care.
– Act as a resource person in the ward so the ward nurses could promote self care and manage patient competently
As a registered nurse transiting to General Medicine APN, I recognised that APN role has become increasingly important, contributing to enhanced patient outcomes and overall quality of care. One of the ways to APN is to improve my clinical knowledge, advanced clinical skills and disease management expertise.
However, during the clinical attachment, I was only shadowing the APN student hence could not truly immerse myself and understand the APN role in depth.
Suggest shadowing the APN to have a better insight on APN role.
