Today’s organizations must constantly change and adapt to remain agile and keep up with the competition, changing cultural events, and environmental challenges. Respond to the following thoughts regarding sustainability:

  • Is there any value in the concept of sustaining change?
  • Argue the return on investment for consultant-driven change.
  • What other methods to sustain change have you seen?

Hello Professor and classmates, 

Sustaining change is highly valuable because it allows a company to see long-term benefits from implemented changes. Sustaining the changes prevents a regression to old habits, and allows a company to build on the improvements that were made, leading to greater success over time. Sustaining change ensures that positive changes stick and get integrated into the company culture (Abbas, 2022).

Quantifying the ROI on a consultant driven change is sometimes hard because the consultant does not have a tangible product with easily tracked metrics. Instead, organizations need to look at statistics surrounding the project to determine the success of the change. In addition, hiring an outside consultant can drive greater change because using an internal manager is often not as successful because the internal manager cannot see the entire organization without bias or supposition whereas an external consultant can view the pieces of the organization with a fresh look. As a result, companies that invest in external consultants have a 2.5 times greater success rate (Creasey, 2022).

As with any change, most will not be successful or sustainable without employee buy-in. The book mentions that rewards are a mechanism for sustaining change (Anderson, 2020) and I have seen how a reward system that bonuses employees for improved number of quality defects based on a change initiative rewarded employees monetarily for sustaining the change.
