Compare and contrast the perspectives of Samantha Power (on Rwanda, A Problem from Hell), N. F. Emizet Kisangani (“The Massacre of Refugees in Congo…”), David N.
Gibbs, “Dag Hammarskjold, the United Nations, and the Congo Crisis…” and Dave Eggers/Valentino Achak Deng (What Is the What?) on the key questions of humanitarian action/intervention, genocide, and the responsibility to protect on the part of both the United States and the United Nations. Remember always our key issues (knowledge, US role/responsibility, UN role/responsibility humanitarian action or the lack of humanitarian action, and overall impact.
Remember: write a critical and thoughtful essay. Do not summarize the reading, Challenge your authors. All use of other material must be credited through the use of footnotes or parentheses, and direct quotations put in quotation marks. Any use of another’s words or ideas without acknowledgement is plagiarism and grounds for failure, not only for this paper, but for the course itself.
