this assignment you must use at least five journal article sources where at least four of them are empirical
research reports (i.e. the paper reports a research study conducted by the authors and will typically include
methods and results sections). The other sources may be literature review articles or meta-analyses or theory
articles if you like. For these five sources you must have acquired and read the full length article/chapter and
your commentary on that article must reflect your own understanding of the work done (i.e. do not copy the
ideas of a different source; that is, don’t rely on a different source to interpret the articles for you).
Aside from your five primary research sources you may use additional primary sources or secondary sources as
you like, but be sure to use proper APA citation so it is clear how you acquired the information you are
reporting (see “Note on using primary and secondary sources” below). You may also use media sources (e.g.,
newspaper articles, news websites, magazine articles, etc.), but only in the first paragraph to establish how
widely discussed a topic is (the idea here is that if a topic has made the national news, it’s an important topic).
More recent articles are always preferred, but may not be available depending on the topic you choose or the
journal you are trying to access. DO NOT use web sites, magazines, or newspaper articles as references. You
should feel free to use them to try to find primary research articles (e.g. web articles on depression at NIH,
WebMD, or Wikipedia may give you ideas).
