The scientific and social definition of the word “drug” varies depending on the perspective that each individual perceives. The scientific definition of the word drug is a chemical substance that is usually administered to a living organism and produces a biological effect. In the scientific community there are different types of drugs, one example would be pharmaceutical drugs they are often used as medication and administered to treat, cure, or prevent a disease. These drugs can also promote the well-being of an individual that is experiencing some type of pain. Unfortunately, an individual can develop an addiction to certain drugs such as opioids, benzodiazepines, methamphetamine, and over the counter medicines. On the other hand, the social definition of the word drug is a substance that can alter the way your mind or body works. This drug isn’t something that a doctor would prescribe you and it can be produced from natural sources. A good example of a social drug would be Cannabis or as teens like to say “weed”. Although in many parts it is not legal this drug has become very popular amongst teenagers. I think there are a lot of possible factors that go into creating categories for drugs and drug use. One being the people that you surround yourself with, if all you do is surround yourself by people who smoke and think it’s cool and try to peer pressure you into doing it you will end up doing it. Social media portrays drugs as making a person cooler and an escape from reality when in fact it’s actually harming you. Smoking cannabis slowly chips away at your brain cells, and it has been proven to even affect your memory. It’s very sad the way that the world is going when it comes to drugs because even if you try to warn people they won’t listen.
