1st case study
Background:
You are
an up and coming consultant at a prestigious healthcare consulting firm. As
part of your first assignment, you have been sent to an offsite hospital to
sort out their data warehousing system. The hospital’s name is ‘Get Well
Fast Hospital.’ The CEO’s name is Mr. Robert Humphrey. The CIO’s name is
Mrs. Janice Crowley. The CMO’s name is Dr. Constance Annoyance.
Proposal:
The
hospital has a variety of problems and the root of these problems stems from
the fact that their current methods of data storage for reporting are severely
antiquated and they need a new data warehouse to replace the old system.
Current Problems:
The
older system consists of Access databases that are strung together across a
variety of different servers. Access is not meant to be used for enterprise
data storage, so there are some clues to their problems right there. Since the
company can’t really track anything, they are experiencing the following:
- Patient errors in diagnosis and medications
- Non reimbursement from Medicare as well as insurance companies.
- Salary issues
- Employee moral Issues
- And many more…
In time,
you will receive data to reiterate some of the above problems that are being
experienced, however it is not yet necessary to divulge that as you have just
started on the job.
If the
hospital continues down its current path, they will lose some of their most
talented employees as well as face potential lawsuits from patients that could
bankrupt the hospital.
Of Note:
- Get Well Fast Hospital does have the means and the revenue to
support this project. - Mr. Humphrey has brought you in and the CIO will serve as the
Project’s Sponsor. - Get Well Fast Hospital has a fairly large IT department that is
competent, yet has no direction or strategy. - You will have roughly 20 people on your project team.
- The data warehouse (currently a bunch of disparate Access databases)
sits downstream of your clinical documentation systems, so compatibility
is not an issue. - It is estimated that this project will take around 5 years to recoup
its cost. - The annual baseline revenue before the project started was
$10,000,000 and it is estimated that revenues will increase by 154% due to
increased accuracy. - It is estimated that employee turnover will be reduced by 20%
annually over 3 years.
Assignment:
Using
the case study data that has been provided, create an executive summary, which
will cover the following:
- The Systems Request
- The Feasibility Analysis
- Technical Feasibility Analysis
- Economic Feasibility Analysis (includes Cost-Benefit Analysis)
- Organizational Feasibility Analysis
Important Notes:
Please
create/estimate your own numbers as necessary for the economic feasibility
analysis, however, please make sure that your numbers are compatible with the
description of the case (5 years to recoup its cost, 154% revenue increase,
etc).
I am
expecting this assignment to be no longer than single-spaced three pages and
submitted as a pdf document. I expect an executive summary that includes both
system request and feasibility study similar to how they are done for the textbook case study. If you like, you may use the
textbook templates for system request and feasibility analysis executive summary.
As part
of the economic feasibility, you are expected to create a cost-benefit analysis
chart/table similar to Figure 2-6 (page 50) on the textbook (another example
can be seen on the textbook case studyFigure 2-B). Make sure to
specifically indicate what annual inflation/devaluation rate you use for PV
calculations.
Please
note that this case study assignment is pertinent to information from case
study data, first two chapters of the textbook and corresponding lectures,
outside readings, and independent judgment.
Please
review the rubric that is provided with this assignment.
