Set design, consume design and lighting are important aspects that are used in a variety of ways to affect the visual story in a film. Watch the move clips linked below: Elisabeth: The Golden Age, Dune, The Artist and Elvis. Write about all four clips following the directions below.
- How important is the set or location to the overall look and feel of the film? Is it essentially a realistic, authentic set, or is it stylized to suggest a heightened reality?
- How does the lighting contribute to the overall emotional attitude or tone of the movie clip? Is the lighting direct and harsh, medium and balanced or soft and diffused? How do the lighting decisions fit the scene?
- What details of costuming and makeup help the actors be “in character”? Do these factors play a role in creating a time and place?
- Are there any special color effects (or black and white) used to achieve a unique overall look? If so, how?
