Introduction
The intelligence oversight mission is grounded in Executive Order 12333, which establishes broad principles under which Intelligence Community components must accomplish their missions. The oversight of intelligence has always been a problem. The ability to control information is an important power in any state or country. In democracies, oversight tends to be the responsibility of the executive branch and legislative powers. The United States is unique in giving extensive oversight responsibilities and powers to the legislative branch. Oversight centers on two different themes; supervision and watchful care, and failure to notice and consider. Intelligence oversight in the United States falls under both of these themes. The intent is to “supervise and maintain watchful care”, though the terrorists’ attacks in 2001 proved “failure to notice and consider” does take place.
In this forum, you will have an opportunity to apply what you learned from reading chapter 10 of your textbook Oversight and Accountability. You must read and research what intelligence oversight is, but more importantly, why intelligence oversight is important.
Initial Post Instructions
In your own words, define what intelligence oversight is. Explain why, in your opinion, oversight of the U.S. Intelligence Community is important. Cite a total of at least three examples from chapter 10 and/or our online resources for this week to support your definition and opinion. Ensure your responses are thorough and fully reflect all aspects of the instructions. Make sure you explain what intelligence oversight is, and the importance of intelligence oversight within the U.S. Intelligence Community, citing three examples from the textbook or online resources. Finally, in your own words, substantiate whether you agree or disagree with your peers. Make certain you respond to two other students and your responses are thorough, clear, and concise and you meet all the writing requirements for this activity.
