NURG 5010 – RESEARCH in NURSING
Module IX
Week 11 Instrumentation, Reliability, and Validity, Data Collection and Human Subject Protection
v Overview
Instrument is the generic term researchers use for measurement devices (surveys, tests, questionnaires, etc.). To help distinguish between instrument and instrumentation, consider that
the instrument is the device and instrumentation is the course of action (the process of developing, testing, and using the device).
Instruments fall into two broad categories: researcher-completed and subject-completed. The former is distinguished by those that researchers administer versus those that participants complete. Researchers chose the type of instrument or instrument to use based on the research question.
Employ appropriate measurements and data collection procedures for specific research questions or hypotheses.
v Objectives
Upon completion of this assignment, the student will be able to:
1. Identify research instruments used for data collection
2. Describe Quantitative Methods > Instrumentation, Validity,
Reliability
3. Discuss descriptive and inferential statistics you plan to use
to describe and analyze data for the proposed project. v Assignments
-
Read Chapters 16 (Quantitative Measurement Concepts), 17 (Measurements Methods Used in Developing EBP), 20 (Collecting and Managing Data)
-
Review Chapter 9 (Ethics in Research: Regarding Human Subject Protection)
-
Review the PowerPoint presentations
-
Review article in Moodle, “Research Instruments”.
Week 11: Submission
-
Restate your hypothesis and variables from Chapter One based on your research question.
-
Identify which instrument you will use for your proposal and discuss in two paragraphs why you chose this instrument.
-
Describe the procedure for protecting human subjects, obtaining IRB approval, and obtaining informed consent.
-
Discuss HIPPA regulations required in your study.
-
Explain what data will be collected, how data will be collected,
who will collect the data, and during what time. How will the data be managed and protected? Communicate how the procedure for data collection is done.
-
Identified appropriate statistics to use to analyze the outcome of the hypothesis /question. The level of significance with rationale for selections was clearly described.
Submit to faculty via the assignment tool on Moodle by 11:30 pm on April 19, 2024.
This assignment concludes Chapter Three. In Part One, your group described your research design, setting, population, and sample.
