Interesting Identities of African American Women and Treatment Utilization of Substance Abuse and Trauma-Stress Disorders

In this review paper, researchers have examined significant variations of intersecting identities affecting African American women across racial and gender-based challenges, interpersonal trauma, cultural context, and socioeconomic structures. Specifically, the literature findings highlight the increasingly, disproportionate prevalence of treatment outcomes and recovery processes harnessing African American women with substance abuse and co-occurring traumatic stress disorders. The existing literature on the unique intersection of marginalized identities, trauma and addiction experiences of African American women, and substance abuse and mental health treatment and recovery effectiveness are reviewed in this discussion.
