(Introduction) Navigating the Infodemic: A Comprehensive Review of Research on Misinformation’s Impact on Minority Youth

Abstract. In an era of unprecedented information accessibility, the proliferation of misinformation poses significant

challenges, particularly for vulnerable populations. This paper presents a comprehensive landscape review of research

examining the impacts of misinformation on minority youth, a demographic uniquely positioned at the intersection of

digital nativity and potential marginalization.

Our review synthesizes findings from diverse disciplines, including communications, public health, psychology,

and education, published between 2010 and 2023. We analyze how various forms of misinformation, ranging from

health-related falsehoods to political disinformation, specifically affect minority youth aged 13-25. Key themes explored include the role of social media platforms in misinformation dissemination, the interplay between cultural

factors and misinformation susceptibility, and the efficacy of existing interventions in fostering digital literacy among

minority youth.

Our findings reveal significant gaps in current research, particularly regarding the long-term effects of misinformation exposure on minority youth’s beliefs and behaviors. We also highlight the need for more culturally nuanced

approaches in studying and addressing misinformation in these communities. The review underscores the importance of understanding how misinformation may exacerbate disparities in health, education, and social outcomes for

minority youth.

This paper contributes to the growing literature on misinformation by examining its impact on a critical yet under-

studied population. Our analysis offers valuable insights for researchers, policymakers, and practitioners developing

targeted strategies to combat misinformation and promote information literacy among minority youth. We propose a

research agenda to address identified knowledge gaps and enhance our understanding of this crucial issue.
