It Wasn’t a War Story. It Was a Love Story’: Tim O’Brien and the Ethics of Home

Literature Research Paper

Assignment: You will write a 1,000-word research paper analyzing a work of literature. You will conduct research on your topic and must use at least 5 different sources, which can come from websites or from the library databases. You will need to include a works cited page and use in-text citations to prevent plagiarism.

Topic:

Pick a short story or long poem that we read this semester and write an in-depth analysis of that story. Focus your paper on a single theme or character. Analyze the story chronologically, starting at the beginning and working your way to the end, focusing on the most important parts. Use quotations and details from the story to prove your analysis. Using the library databases, research information that you can incorporate into your analysis of the story.

Writing Your Paper:

  1. Conduct Research:
  • Create a working thesis. Decide what your paper will try to prove about the story. You may need to change it by the time you finish doing your research.
  • You will need to conduct research on your topic.
  • You are required to use the library databases to find articles on your topic. At least 3 of your sources need to be from the databases.

  1. Take Notes:
  • After finding your sources, read over your articles and take notes. You should highlight your articles and/or take notes on note cards. I recommend using note cards, because they are helpful when you need to organize your information and group similar topics together.
  • Keep track of your sources as you go. Make sure to write the title of the source on each note card and the page number where you found the information.
  • Create your works cited page. Use a citation generator such as KnightCite to help you.

  1. Begin Drafting:
    • You must include quotes from both the story and from all 5 of your sources. Don’t use more than one block quotation.
    • You should summarize and paraphrase most of your information.
    • Make sure that you cite all of your sources correctly, including the short story. If you fail to give credit for ideas that are not yours, you have plagiarized, and will receive a zero on the paper. If you use AI to write any part of your paper for you, you will not receive credit for it.

  1. Revise/Edit:
  • Once you have finished writing, make sure that your essay meets the assignment, that your thesis is focused, that your arguments have enough support, and that your paper is organized effectively. For extra help, make an appointment in the Learning Center (G202).
  • When you’re done revising, make sure that you’ve used correct spelling, grammar and punctuation. Don’t rely on spell-check! Try to catch as many mistakes as you can yourself, and then ask a friend to read it over and see if they can find any more.
