Use this disscusion entry to reflect deeply about the ideas, questions, and information presented in our readings this week.
DIRECTIONS FOR THE FOLLOWING DISSCUSION
Please write about the following two prompts. Write your journal discussing globalization & the TED Talks by Dorling, Khanna, & Lee as well as Hadza, Diamond, & Urbanization. Unlike the previous assignment, two di-fferent discussions prompts must be answered seprately (150-200) words each.
Dorling, Khanna, & Lee
- Prompt 1: Dorling & Khanna talk about how we can envision the world when we stop just considering it as land masses & political boundaries. In a journal of 100-200 words, explain whether or not you believe Dorling & Khanna are making the same argument & how their use of maps, data, etc. can change the way we view cultures. Explain your answer & use eexamples from the Talks to support your answer. (200 words each prompt)
Most people are surprised to find out that there are still hunter-gatherer tribes that still exist in the “modern world.” Part of that is an ethnocentric view that more modern ways of subsistence & society must be better. Another part comes from the idea that there is no place for such old-fashioned ways of life in the modern world.
Sadly, the second half is proving closer to true than not, though it’s not because the Hadza’s way of life isn’t functional. They are capable of flourishing, provided they’re given the space to do so. The urbanization of their hunting grounds continues to encroach on their way of life.
